Online Art Education: DrawingTutorialsOnline

DrawingTutorialsOnline is a new online art education membership website and community launched last month by Matthew Archambault.  As one of the first members of the site, I feel that it is about time to give a review. First off, Matthew is an art instructor at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan New York, and he is also an illustrator.  He is a great artist, and my first introduction to his work was through his youtube tutorials and his first website, MattsIllustrations.com.  I eventually bought several of his figure drawing dvds and really enjoyed them.

DrawingTutorialsOnline Features:

As of September 3, 2008

* There are 2 DrawingTutorialsOnline membership levels:

(1) $7.95/month - Access to everything on the website with the exception of the “Online DVD” department.

(2) $15.95/month - Access to everything on the website including the “Online DVD” department. Access every DVD ever created by Matthew Archambault.

* Member Forum where you can talk to other members and ask Matt questions directly and request tutorial topics.

* Feature Video - Every week video tutorials are added to the site.  These are not just quick five minute tutorials.  Most of them are 40 minutes or more.

* Feature Articles - Every week Matt writes and posts new articles about drawing, professional art techniques, and art as a business.

* Member Gallery - You can post your work and get feedback from Matt and other members.

* Resources - The site has a lot of reference photos to draw and more reference material is being added all the time.

My Experience

As I said before, I’ve been a member since the site launched in August.  Before I signed up, I knew that Matt was a great artist, but I’ve never been a member of an drawing site and didn’t quite know how it was going to work.  The low cost of membership made trying it out an easy decision.  I was not disappointed, the material and interaction with Matt is fantastic.  It’s been a month, and I haven’t even scratched the surface of reviewing all the material available on the site and more is being added every week.  I can’t believe that the cost of membership is so low and the quality of the video and learning materials is so high.  I recommended getting the membership that includes the online dvd content.  I have several of his dvds but not all of them, so having access to them is a nice extra.  In my search for online art education options, DrawingTutorialsOnline was definitely a great find.

Again here is the link for site -

Scan not quite as good as the previous ones because I’m not using my computer equipment. But here’s the update anyway.

Update,  back home with my equipment.  Here’s an update of the scan.

Online Art Education: Schoolism Classes

I’m signing up for the The Art of Caricature with Jason Seiler class at the Schoolism online art school.  The class states that it’s for any level artist so that’s makes me feel a little less intimidated.  All the Schoolism artists are fantastic artists and Bobby Chiu is its founder.  The instructors are all working artists in their field and are industry leaders.

I’ve been following the Schoolism site for a couple of years now and have decided to jump aboard.  When you sign up for a class, you get access to the instructor’s video lessons.  Each lesson is a couple of hours long.  At the end of the lesson you receive your homework.  Additionally, you get a personal video critique of your homework every week.  You can also view the critiques of your classmates homework.  So there is a great opportunity for learning.  You can also communicate with your instructor via email.

Sure nothing may be better than attending a physical class, but art school classes aren’t an option for me right now.  So this is the next best thing.  I also think that education is changing and the online classes are getting to the level where they are just as informative and helpful as classes taken at a physical school or workshop.

Schoolism currently offers 4 class with another 1 on the way:

Class                                                Instructor

Digital Painting with Bobby Chiu             Bobby Chiu

Character Design by Silver                    Stephen Silver

The Art of Caricature with Jason Seiler    Jason Seiler

Storyboarding with Kris Pearn                 Kris Pearn

Coming Soon - Drawing Fundamentals With Marcelo Vignali

As I said before the first class I’m taking is The Art of Caricature with Jason Seiler. My class doesn’t start until the end of October, but I know that the assignments are going to be challenging and I want to give myself the best chance of doing well.  So next week I am going to resume trying to draw a face a day in addition to my perspective drawings.  After this class I plan on taking some the other ones also.
