Online Art Education: Schoolism Classes

I’m signing up for the The Art of Caricature with Jason Seiler class at the Schoolism online art school.  The class states that it’s for any level artist so that’s makes me feel a little less intimidated.  All the Schoolism artists are fantastic artists and Bobby Chiu is its founder.  The instructors are all working artists in their field and are industry leaders.

I’ve been following the Schoolism site for a couple of years now and have decided to jump aboard.  When you sign up for a class, you get access to the instructor’s video lessons.  Each lesson is a couple of hours long.  At the end of the lesson you receive your homework.  Additionally, you get a personal video critique of your homework every week.  You can also view the critiques of your classmates homework.  So there is a great opportunity for learning.  You can also communicate with your instructor via email.

Sure nothing may be better than attending a physical class, but art school classes aren’t an option for me right now.  So this is the next best thing.  I also think that education is changing and the online classes are getting to the level where they are just as informative and helpful as classes taken at a physical school or workshop.

Schoolism currently offers 4 class with another 1 on the way:

Class                                                Instructor

Digital Painting with Bobby Chiu             Bobby Chiu

Character Design by Silver                    Stephen Silver

The Art of Caricature with Jason Seiler    Jason Seiler

Storyboarding with Kris Pearn                 Kris Pearn

Coming Soon - Drawing Fundamentals With Marcelo Vignali

As I said before the first class I’m taking is The Art of Caricature with Jason Seiler. My class doesn’t start until the end of October, but I know that the assignments are going to be challenging and I want to give myself the best chance of doing well.  So next week I am going to resume trying to draw a face a day in addition to my perspective drawings.  After this class I plan on taking some the other ones also.

Perspective Drawing Then And Now

After completing my line drawing yesterday, I looked back on some of previous perspective drawings from the past 6 months.  Before looking back on my drawings I really didn’t know how much progress I had made.  But looking back was a sobering experience.

I don’t know what exactly has contributed to my leap forward.  I think mainly it is the new found belief I have in myself.  Other things that have probably helped include my practice of just drawing square in every possible position I can think of.  Also I have banished the ruler.  I don’t want to become dependent on it so I just don’t use one at all.  I think this has contributed to improving my line quality.  I still have a lot of perspective issue I have to work out but at least I can see that my practice is paying off.

Perspective Drawing Practice: 3

I am really taking a liking to drawing furniture.  Last night I drew a rather large drawing by my standards.  It was 12×18 inches.  This is the biggest drawing I have done.  I haven’t shaded it yet, but I am uploading the line drawing.  Since it was so large, I had to scan it in 3 parts and merge those parts together in GIMP.  This was not the easiest task, but I think I merged them pretty well and you should get the general effect of the drawing.

Perspective Drawing Practice: 2

I’ve been working hard to improve my perspective drawing.  I love interiors and want to draw them correctly and realistically.  Over the past few months I’ve been doing a lot of perspective exercises drawing boxes and other shapes.  Needless to say this was getting a bit boring so I decided to put the perspective knowledge I’ve gained so far to work.  So I sent off for a bunch of free catalogs and started drawing the furniture in them.  I’m much farther ahead than I was a few months ago in perspective drawing.  I’m seeing improvement!
